Search Engine Optimization

Website Optimization

Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving natural search rankings for targeted keywords. This is achieved by "On-Page" techniques, directly editing a website, or by "Off-Page" techniques, by marketing that indirectly affect the website. On-page optimization, often referred to as Website Optimization, helps make it easy for search engines to understand what you do, and the more clearly it understands this the more relevance it can place on your page when it displays results for a particular search term. This Website Optimization, is a component of Search Engine Optimization, and is about making it clear to search engines what it is you do.

There are many different techniques used during this process of Website Optimization, but it really all starts with good, clean, well-written content. Well-written content takes in mind both audiences; your website viewers, and search engines. Everything else that is done On-Page reinforces the content in a way that search engines can understand and reward. But this On-Page optimization can only get you so far, and then it is the Off-Page techniques that will get you

Link Building / Link Popularity

Google tells us that one extremely important Off-Page factor, that ranks you higher in a results page, is Link Popularity for the website. The higher the number of quality, relevant links, referred to as Backlinks, pointing to your website, the better your ranking will be. There are different efforts that you can employ to get inbound links. The number of links isn't as much important as the quality, or the relevance to your website. If you sell Home Replacement Windows, an inbound link from Bernie's Auto Body, doesn't count for nearly as much as a link from the state Window Association website, or a link from an article you wrote and got picked up on Bob Vila's website about Replacing your Home Windows.

Social Media Marketing / Social Media Optimization

Social Media Optimization is a set of methods that generate website publicity that will improve search engine rankings. Such methods include the use of Social Media websites like Digg, Flickr, or YouTube, and Social Media technologies like RSS feeds or Blogging. This newly emerging method of Off-Page optimization is in many ways produces viral marketing effects.

Article & Press Release Creation

Another emerging method of creating inbound links (often referred to as Backlinks) to your website is by generating information articles that have links referencing your website. These articles are not blatantly advertising your website, but more explaining answers to popular questions in which you then list yourself as author and give link to your website. The idea is to gain consumer confidence about your knowledge of a given topic, enough so that they will search you out to obtain your services. The more well-written your article, the higher chance you have of it getting picked up by another website and posted by them, thus creating more relevant inbound links.

Paid Placement / Pay Per Click Advertising

Pay Per Click Advertisement is by far the most common of the Search Engine Marketing approaches. It uses sponsored, or "Paid", search engine listings authored by the company to drive traffic to its website. Businesses bid on search terms related to their businesses, which starts as low as 5 cents and can go higher than $100. The search engines rank these ads based on a competitive auction and relevancy factors and then list them either on top or the side of the organic rankings.

Pay Per Click advertising is a great way to get traffic to your site immediately and can help you get onto the first page of ranking results artificially, until organic rankings get you there naturally. This marketing mechanism is powerful and will require its own setup and maintenance. But if done correctly, it can make an immediate impact on site traffic, using keywords that in organic results may take months to achieve.
